Alison Smale /
Alison Smale began covering Germany and the Soviet Union for the Associated Press in the 1980s. As AP bureau chief in Moscow and then Vienna, she directed coverage of the Iron Curtain collapse, the breakup of Yugoslavia, and the Balkan wars that followed. Fluent in Russian, German, French, and Serbo-Croatian, Smale built a network of sources among dissidents who later rose to power in Russia and Eastern Europe. She joined the New York Times as assistant foreign editor before moving to Paris as managing editor of the International Herald Tribune.
