Tim Hetherington /

World Press Photo of the Year recipient Tim Hetherington was born in Liverpool, UK, in 1970. He is based between London and New York, and is a contributing photographer for Vanity Fair magazine.

His interest lies in creating diverse forms of photographic communication from long-term projects, and his experiments have ranged from digital projections at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, to fly-poster exhibitions in Lagos, to handheld device downloads. Recent projects include 'Healing Sport', 'Blind Link Project', and 'Liberia'. He is currently working on a project about a group of US soldiers in Afghanistan.

He was awarded a Fellowship from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (2000-4), a Hasselblad Foundation grant (2002), and three World Press Photo prizes. His book about Liberia, Long Story Bit By Bit, will be published by Umbrage in 2009.

As a film maker, he has worked as a cameraman and director/producer. Recent work includes credits on 'Liberia: an Uncivil War' (2004, winner of IDFA special jury prize, IDA 'Courage Under Fire' award) and 'The Devil Rides on Horseback' (2007).
